Get Found Where Your Customers Search Today

In Google and in AI Answers

Search engine optimization (SEO) makes sure your website appears for the right queries. In 2026 that is no longer enough on its own: customers increasingly ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI summaries. We combine classic SEO with visibility in AI answers, so your brand is named in both places.

What Does Search Engine Optimization Mean in 2026?

SEO means building a website so that search engines understand it and people find what they are looking for there. The foundation remains the same: a technically clean site, content that answers real questions, and trust built through evidence and mentions by others.

What has changed is the interface. Search systems now often answer questions directly before any click happens. According to a study by the Pew Research Center (68,879 Google searches), users clicked a classic result in 8% of cases when an AI summary was present, versus 15% without an AI summary. According to Ahrefs, the first position loses about 58% of its expected click-through rate when an AI Overview appears (February 2026, 300,000 keywords). The figures come mainly from the US and vary by study. The direction is clear: visibility alone brings fewer visitors, and whoever is named in the answer wins.

The Three Pillars

  1. Technology: Fast, crawlable, mobile-optimized pages with a clean structure.
  2. Content: Answers to real customer questions, with evidence, examples and a clear author.
  3. Trust: Reviews, references and mentions on other websites.

How AI Systems Choose Brands

Search systems with AI compile answers from several sources and name individual brands and pages in the process. Who is named is not decided by Google ranking alone. According to an analysis by Ahrefs, around three quarters of the pages cited in AI Overviews in mid-2025 also ranked in Google’s top 10; in early 2026 it was only about 38%. Increasingly, what gets cited is what answers a question clearly and with evidence, even without a top position.

What the Current Data Supports

  • Evidence-based content: According to the GEO study by Aggarwal et al. (arXiv, 2023), sources, figures and quotations increase visibility in generative answers by up to 40%.
  • Mentions on other websites: According to an analysis by AirOps, around 85% of brand mentions in AI answers come from third-party pages such as review portals, forums, trade media and video platforms. This is a single source and should be read as a direction.
  • Freshness and structure: Well-maintained pages with a clear heading structure and the answer at the start are cited more often.
  • Citation pays off: According to Seer Interactive, brands cited in an AI Overview achieve 35% higher organic click-through rates.
  • Less weight than expected: According to a log analysis by Ahrefs, llms.txt shows hardly any requests. Domain authority is a poor predictor of citations in pure AI systems.

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is therefore not a new discipline alongside SEO but its extension: according to several industry sources, it overlaps with clean SEO by about 80%.

The Limits

  • Errors and inventions: AI texts contain incorrect statements. Every claim is checked.
  • Interchangeability: Mass-produced texts without your own experience and evidence stand out neither to readers nor to AI systems as a source.
  • Labeling: Since August 2, 2026, the transparency obligations under Article 50 of the EU AI Act apply, including to chatbots and realistic AI images, videos and voices. For AI texts, public interest and editorial control matter. Individual legal cases should be reviewed by a lawyer.
  • Data protection: Customer data does not belong in public AI tools without a legal basis.

In Gartner’s survey of 401 marketing leaders (2026), 70% see AI as a critical goal, while only 30% report mature AI capabilities. The difference rarely lies in the technology, but in data, processes and review rules.

What Follows from This

  1. Quality over quantity: Evidence-based, well-maintained content with recognizable authors wins.
  2. Brand matters: Whoever is mentioned in several places is cited more often.
  3. Extend measurement: In addition to rankings, mentions and citations in AI answers belong in the report.
  4. Own data: Your own customer contacts and good consent processes secure independence from platform changes.

Our Approach in Four Steps

  1. Analysis: Review technology, content, competitors and visibility in Google and AI answers. Result: a prioritized action list.
  2. Strategy: Define target groups, topics and page structure, based on the real questions of your customers.
  3. Implementation: Technical fixes, revised and new content, structured data, building reviews and mentions.
  4. Measurement and optimization: Monthly evaluation of inquiries, rankings and AI mentions; adjustments based on results.
